Not By Might, Nor By Power

Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit saith the Lord of Hosts"

Zechariah 4.6

We hear a lot about power today. Your automobile has a powerful engine. Electric Power plants keep us running. The newest computer is the one with the most Power. Men and women in business and government are judged important on the basis of their Power.  We assume that if we have enough Power, then everything will work out for us. Conversely, without Power, we can accomplish nothing. Therefore, we seek after power.
Some people become obsessed either with attaining power or with their lack of power. But as He does so often, God has a different point of view. He says that we don't need power in ourselves to see things accomplished in our lives. He says that it isn't by our might or our power, but by His spirit that things get accomplished.
The neat thing about that is that it takes the pressure off of us. When we feel powerless, we can turn to the one who is power-full. When we have reached the end of our rope, we can call on the rope maker to extend the line. When we have lost all hope,  we can turn to the one who is the source of all hope. When the task is too big for us to handle alone, we can call on the one who assigned us the task and he will help us carry it out.
When someone looks at me, they might say, "She doesn't have any power. What can she accomplish?" And I have to agree. I don't have that much power and I can accomplish very little on my own. But when you add the spirit of God into the mix, the picture changes. With the Holy Spirit working through me, I have all the power I need and more. I can accomplish any task God sets before me. When I wonder, "How am I going to do this thing?" God reminds me that his spirit wouldn't lead me where his strength couldn't empower me. So, even though I'm not a very powerful person in the eyes of many, I know that I have the greatest power of all. I have the Holy Spirit living inside me and that's the greatest power of all.
